How Do Courts Determine Child Support?

The center of any child support case is, of course, the child. The court is obligated to make a ruling that reflects the child’s best interests. To make things easier on yourself, your spouse, and your child, you should approach your child support case with the same attitude and objective.

What you and the court should consider when assigning child support includes:

  • Financial situations of both parents
  • Predicted cost to raise your child
  • Costs associated with child’s medical care
  • Number of children included in the child support order

In New Hampshire, parents are financially responsible for their children until the child graduates from high school, or turns 18 years of age, whichever occurs later. With this in mind, you should not be surprised if you are ordered to pay child support for years. Furthermore, courts will use established New Hampshire Child Support Guidelines to help determine how much the non-custodial parent pays to the custodial parent. This amount may be adjusted by the court to ensure the payments are fair for the child and parents.
